Wine, the oldest alcoholic beverage, is an enthralling subject to study. Vitis Vinifera, the species of grapevine from which modern wine is made, is believed to have originated in the Black Sea region close to Georgia and Armenia. The first cultivation of vines and making of wines could possibly have occurred between 5,000 or 7,000 BC as evidenced by the discovery of clay pottery decorated with grapes which archaeologists have dated to this era.

In recent years there has been a deluge of TV series, magazine and newspaper columns dedicated to wine.

The effect of all this publicity is an increasingly educated public, eager for more information on wine. When the public goes out to dine or to buy wine, it expects a higher level of knowledge and service from the 'professional' wine waiter. I have written this book to promote that level of professionalism as well as to provide information for the average wine consumer.

The Australian Wine Guide 5th edition keeps you up to date about wine in Australia. It covers types and styles of wine, wine production, tasting and serving wine. It teaches you about developing your palate, interpreting a wine label and international wine styles. Wine and food matching and Australian geographical regions have been completely updated and expanded. Leading Australian winemakers offer their thoughts on wine regions and grape varieties.

Approximately 3,000 wines were tasted over 1½ years for inclusion into the new edition and wines have been rated into three categories – Outstanding, Highly Recommended and Recommended; providing an essential guide for your journey into the world of wine.

What Wine Writers and Industry Say About This Book

"Looking for a good introductory wine book with an Australian emphasis? It would be difficult to go past The Australian Wine Guide, just released in it's fifth edition, revised and updated, complete with the newest GI (geographical indication) - NSW's New England- and winery recommendations for each region....This is not a guide in the usual meaning of the word, as in a book full of tasting notes. It's a general introduction to wine. Clive Hartley has produced an excellent book to suit wine students whether amateur or aspiring professional. It is comprehensive, easy to read, packed with information and takes a global view"

Huon Hooke,

"The Australian Wine Guide 5th Edition is a great read.
In terms of the level of knowledge that we want to achieve with the average team member, this is it!
We see this potentially as a handy tool to upgrade their wine knowledge in a rather short and structured period of time.
Congratulations, a great book!"
